Short answer: Currently Rolla does not offer nap detection.
Primary Goal of the Sleep Card
The Sleep card in the the App is specifically designed to:
- Encourage and build the habit of achieving 8 hours of uninterrupted nighttime sleep.
- Promote long-term, sustainable sleep routines that align with circadian rhythms for optimal health and performance.
Why Naps Aren't Included
- Naps, although beneficial for recovery, are not tracked or reflected in the Sleep card metrics.
- This is intentional because including naps could undermine the primary goal, which is to:
- Motivate users to prioritize consolidated nightly sleep.
- Prevent compensating for poor nighttime sleep with sporadic daytime naps.
Benefits of Napping
We fully acknowledge that short afternoon naps can:
- Improve alertness.
- Enhance cognitive performance.
- Support recovery in cases of sleep debt or intense training.
These benefits are undeniable, but:
- They do not substitute for the physiological benefits of a continuous 8-hour sleep period, especially for metabolic health, hormone regulation, and deep sleep cycles.
Future Development Considerations
- While naps are excluded from the Sleep card, feedback on this topic is valuable.
- There may be opportunities to explore separate insights or tracking for naps in future versions, ensuring the primary nighttime sleep goal remains clear and undiluted.
